AP Red Cross aims to induct one million youth volunteers

Visakhapatnam: With a view to increasing its presence and taking up more philanthropic activities like blood donation and extending support to industrial workers at the time of accidents and those in distress, Andhra Pradesh Red Cross has decided to expand its base.
The Red Cross in the State is collecting one lakh blood units in 21 blood centres out of five lakh total units collected per year and it is proposed to double the voluntary blood collection to cater to the needs of poor patients and thalassemia patients. A function was held in Visakhapatnam on Sunday to review the progress of implementing the mission to induct more volunteers with the participation of AP Red Cross Chairman A Sridhar Reddy, CEO and retired IAS officer AK Parida, vice-chairman P Jagan Mohan Rao, treasurer Dr Venkateswar Reddy and Visakhapatnam branch chairman Dr Siva Nagendra Reddy.
Parida later told Bizz Buzz that 3,000 factory workers in and around Visakhapatnam will be trained by AP Red Cross in first aid to protect the lives of five lakh workers in case of any industrial accidents. As many as 1.60 lakh NCC cadets in the State will join as Youth Red Cross volunteers and get trained by AP Red Cross. First Aid and Disaster Management Climate Action Fund is created to undertake mitigation activities through the one million Youth Red Cross volunteers.

He said an app developed by them, first of its kind in the country, is available in Google Play Store as a digital platform to register as a volunteer and participate in the five core activities and report the achievements and progress on each activity through the app.
The Red Cross has appealed to the students studying in colleges/universities to enroll themselves as Youth Red Cross (YRC) volunteers using the app. SMS messages and links will be sent to all the students through their mobile numbers registered with the Education Department. In case if any student does not get the SMS message and the link, they can register themselves in the general category using the app.
After registering as volunteers all the students and youth will be motivated to participate in the core Red Cross activities of (i) Blood Donation (ii) Basic First Aid Training (iii) Disaster Management (iv) Climate Action Initiative (v) Tree Plantation Campaign (vi) Health Camps for the Tribals and Senior Citizens.
Based on the evaluation, three best colleges in the district and three best districts in the State will be presented with the Governor’s Gold Medal on every Republic Day celebration.
